Ukrainian Valerii Danevych makes his functional wrist watches almost entirely out of wood, with the sole exception of a metal spring needed to propel the movement. According to Unique Watch Guide, he mostly uses birch because of its strength and resistance, but also more exotic wood such as juniper and bamboo.

Seattle’s vision of an urban food oasis is going forward. A seven-acre plot of land in the city’s Beacon Hill neighborhood will be planted with hundreds of different kinds of edibles: walnut and chestnut trees; blueberry and raspberry bushes; fruit trees, including apples and pears; exotics like pineapple, yuzu citrus, guava, persimmons, honeyberries, and lingonberries; herbs; and more. All will be available for public plucking to anyone who wanders into the city’s first food forest.
“This is totally innovative, and has never been done before in a public park,” Margarett Harrison, lead landscape architect for the Beacon Food Forest project, tells TakePart. Harrison is working on construction and permit drawings now and expects to break ground this summer.
The concept of a food forest certainly pushes the envelope on urban agriculture and is grounded in the concept of permaculture, which means it will be perennial and self-sustaining, like a forest is in the wild. Not only is this forest Seattle’s first large-scale permaculture project, but it’s also believed to be the first of its kind in the nation.

Renegades documents the fans of Botswana’s heavy metal subculture, an underground minority rebelling against the status quo, redrawing the borders of both heavy metal and orthodox culture in Botswana. Marshall traveled to Botswana to take portraits of the metal scene there – a small but strong one, heavily influenced by bands like Iron Maiden, Megadeath and Motörhead.

“I can’t recall one instance where they were reluctant or dubious towards my taking their portraits,” says Marshall. “In most cases they relished the opportunity to show themselves off. They are proud and wield a sort of tangible power, wrought from both the fantasy and sonic force of metal. Whereas many ‘metal heads’ can be arrogant or smugly indifferent, these guys in Botswana are very open.”

I’ve posted part of this before, but just had to share the awesome new photographs included in this set. :3

Medusa’s story tells how the powerful female, whimsical and destructive and incomprehensible and unpurged from matriarchal origin, having her own gaze, was subjected as a repulsive image of castration and embodiment of the lack. The impossibility of explaining and understanding her led Poseidon to rape her and Perseus to murder her. Elimination of the powerful female and the possibility of her subjectivity is justified as the hero constructs her differentiated and unclaimable nature as horrific and monstrous in order to destroy her.

from Medusa and the Female Gaze by Susan Bowers (via terrestrial)

I’ve always been frustrated with how Medusa is portrayed as ‘evil’ in every fictional portrayal of her that I’ve seen

I mean she doesn’t go around turning people to stone for fun. She’s a rape victim who Athena cursed to turn people to stone for the terrible crime of…being assaulted in her temple

I kind of want to see a film where Medusa kills Perseus and proceeds to go on an amazing revenge spree against the Greek gods with the other Gorgons and basically fucks up ALL of their stuff

In my head it’s basically Greek myth meets Kill Bill

(via thefingerfuckingfemalefury)

AMEN. Athena turned the poor girl into a snake haired monster for being raped in her temple by Poseidon. Meanwhile, the perpetrator of the crime—Athena’s uncle—goes unpunished. Ridiculous.

^ THIS

It’s why it bugs me when modern day stories that deal with characters from Greek myth make her out to be some kind of evil monster…when in the myths, she’s a victim of horrible things being done to her, not some heartless force of evil

(via thefingerfuckingfemalefury)

This myth also explores how other women uphold patriarchal power. Athena is seen as this bad ass, empowered Goddess but she really isn’t. She sprung fully formed out of Zeus’s mind and she always supported his rule. This is an example of how Athena used her power to the detriment of her sisters.

(via atriptothemorg)

it’s been a couple years, so correct me on this, but - is that not a similar role to the one Athena also plays in the Oresteia?

(via paradife-loft)

word Athena’s basically the hand of the patriarchy: “I favor the male in all things…I am wholly of the father. Thus I will not privilege the fate of a woman…”? badass: yes, feminist: no.

(via 15thdimensionspacecat)

I WOULD PAY EVERYTHING TO SEE THIS MOVIE.

Delta Blues - Another PoCentric Faux Show
                      Urban Fantasy/Action/Drama/[Musical?]

DELTA BLUES - Loosely based on the legend of Robert Johnson,Delta Bluesfollows R.T. “Artie” Johnson [Aldis Hodge], as he hunts monsters, breaks curses, and clashes with urban legends—all while trying to  make it as a travelling musician.

After a fateful encounter at a crossroads, Artie is given a host of gifts— both musical and supernatural. In exchange, he is tasked with using his newfound powers to vanquish evil wherever encountered until his debt is paid.

The cases would be relatively episodic, though there’d be some overarching plot that I haven’t thought of in the least, yet. The setting takes us from the street corners and juke joints of towns on the Mississippi Delta to big cities like New York and Chicago, and many places in between.

Creatures, legends, and lore would be primarily based on African/Black/Southern fare –think Stagger LeeJé-rougethe Boo Hag, etc- though PoC mainstays from other cultures, as well as standard cryptid classics would be on the table too.

Artie’s childhood friend Michael “Mack” Bowman [Kid Cudi] and friendly neighborhood magic practitioner Vivian “Viv” Jackson [Elle Varner] tag along, because I prefer trios to dudebro duos.

{{Think Supernatural, but less jarringly White and appropriative!}}

But no, in all seriousness, who do I have to kill to make this show an actual thing?

Because

This is everything I have ever wanted.

I WANT THIS
